The Urgency of Art Prize 2026
Short Listed - Megumi Ohata

Megumi Ohata is a London-based interdisciplinary artist and prosthetics
technician for film and television of Japanese and Korean heritage. Working
with artificial skin textiles imprinted from the texture of their own skin, they
create hyperreal sculptures, installations, and performances that explore
identity, embodiment, and posthumanism.

Ohata’s work is rooted in lived experience, including child abuse, gender
struggle, discrimination, and the instability of inherited identity. Using
prosthetics-based methods and references to Japanese yōkai folklore, they
build hybrid bodies and wearable skins that blur boundaries between self and
other, human and non-human, intimacy and unease. In their practice, skin
becomes more than a surface; it becomes a threshold through which memory,
trauma, and cultural inheritance are carried and transformed.

At the centre of Ohata’s work is a question that feels both personal and
universal: what makes a body relatable? Through materially intensive
processes, they create forms that can feel tender, uncanny, and emotionally
charged all at once, inviting viewers to stay with vulnerability rather than look
away from it.

Ohata holds an MA with Distinction in Contemporary Art Practice from the
Royal College of Art, London, and a BA with First-Class Honours in Illustration
from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. Their work is
currently represented by K:art Studio (London) and SENSE GALLERY (Berlin),
and has been recognised through awards, residencies, and international
presentations.
