The Urgency of Art is an independent UK art publication for artists and thinkers working from social, ecological and philosophical concerns rather than market ambition. We publish criticism, artist features and exhibition coverage, and from 2026 we curate exhibitions with London venues. We sit deliberately outside both the academic press and the commercial gallery system. Eighteen issues to date.

Who reads us

We are not a general-interest publication, and we do not try to be. Our readership arrives through the art world itself — through the artists we publish, the institutions we work with, the exhibitions we cover, and the London art schools our contributors come from. The result is a readership composed almost entirely of people working inside the sector:

• Artists in London and across the Europe

• Curators, independent gallerists and arts programmers

• Alumni of RCA, UAL, Slade and Goldsmiths

We report reach and network, not follower counts. A partnership with us does not buy volume; it places work in front of a defined professional readership and inside a network of over seventy artists and thirty-five institutions who circulate what we publish.
